This slab of Specular Hematite (aka Specularite) is a variety of hematite which displays specular, glittery reflectivity due to the microscopic mirror-like flakes of hematite and mica. Since this material does not obtain a good traditional polish, the front of the specimen is coated with an acrylic resin to bring out its luster while the back of the piece has been left natural. An acrylic stand is included.
This material was mined in the Lake Superior Iron District of Upper Michigan.
Note that the photos do not capture the full visual effect caused by the play of light reflecting off this piece.
Size of Entire Specimen: 6 1/2” by 6” by 1/4”, Weight: 1.2 lb
