Pyrite is a heavy, gold-colored metallic mineral (iron sulfide, FeS2) which can be mistaken for real Gold. For that reason it gets a nickname of “Fool’s Gold”. Its name comes from the Greek word for “fire” because it sparks when struck. This specimen is a naturally-occurring, lustrous cluster of well-formed crystals of Pyrite. It is from the Huanzala Mine, Ancash Department, Peru. Pyrite is in the Isometric class of crystals.
