This piece of marble contains 11 polished orthoceras fossils in its natural, unpolished marble matrix. It makes an excellent piece of nature’s artwork to admire . Orthoceras are primitive, extinct, straight-shelled members of the Nautilus family of cephalopods. They inhabited the oceans of what are now the Atlas Mountains of Erfoud, Morocco some 365 million years ago during the Devonian Period. The originally hollow shells have, over the vast expanse of time, been filled in with calcite crystals but the chamber walls are still intact. Note the unpolished orthoceras fossils on the back of the piece.
