This naturally-occurring specimen of native copper is from the Lake Superior Copper District, Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It formed in cracks in pre-Cambrian age basaltic lava. It has been cleaned and coated with lacquer to prevent tarnishing. The Upper Peninsula (Keweenaw Peninsula) of Michigan is one of the few places in the world where one can find a copper deposit in its native, unoxidized form.
