FPC1This is one fossilized pine cone cut in half and polished on the cut surface showing the internal make up including the stem and seeds. The outside surface shows the typical external texture. It is from the conifer tree Araucarioxylon mirabilis that thrived during the Jurassic Period, 200 million years ago and is from Cerro Cuadrado, Patagonia, Argentina.

FGAMM1These slate layers contain a mass mortality of the ammonite Dactylioceras sp. About 165 million years ago, they roamed the Jurassic seas over what is now Holzmaden, Germany. The ammonites are the ancestral cousins of the modern nautilus. Ammonites disappeared from the fossil record 65 million years ago along with dinosaurs and many other organisms.

FRAPL,
FRAPR
FRAPSL, FRASRThese specimens, genus Quenstedticeras, roamed the seas that covered the Saratov Region of Russia during the Middle Jurassic Period, about 180 million years ago. They exhibit good nacre (Mother-of- Pearl) and pronounced ribbing on the shell. These extinct critters were similar to their extant cousin, the Chambered Nautilus.

FDCOP1
FDCOP2The two photos above show both the outer surface character and the internal features of this agatized conversation piece of what a dinosaur left behind. These "droppings" give a clue to the diet of these ancient reptiles. Paleontologist slice these droppings very thin and study them under a microscope to see bone fragments and plant pollen grains. It was excreted 160 million years ago during the Jurassic Period in what is now called the Morrison Formation of Utah.

FPWDA3These slabs were once parts of trees that were buried by muddy volcanic ash. Slowly, the silica in the ash seeped into the wood and replaced the slowly decaying organic material. Color variations are caused by traces of other elements in the mixture. Iron produced various shades of red, yellow and blue. Cobalt and chromium provided blue and green. Pieces that contain these colors are nicknamed "Rainbow Wood". Carbon and manganese added the black. These polished cross-sectional slabs are from the primitive tree species Araucarioxylon arizonicum (ancient ancestor of the Norfolk Island Pine) which lived 225 million years ago in the Triassic Period. They were collected from the Chinle Formation of Arizona.

This fossilized wood is unique for its visible, drusy quartz crystals lining cavities in the partly decomposed wood. Also visible is the dark brown to black coloration due to the presence of carbon. It is from the Upper Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era, about 80 million years ago. It was collected in Tuskeegee, Alabama.
