These are desication-cracked mudstone geodes lined with brown aragonite and yellow calcite crystals.  They were formed during the Cretaceous Period, about 75 million years ago in what is now Utah.

These eggs are carved from the semi-precious stone malachite that is mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly called Zaire.  Malachite is a copper oxide carbonate.  The patterns are formed by variations in copper content.

This Rose Quartz Egg is from Madagascar.  It displays an asterism or star pattern when a bright light strikes it.  Move the egg around until you see three shimmering lines intersect to form a star.

These eggs are carved from the picturesque Kanab Goldenstone from Kanab, Utah.  The scenic pattern is a result of ancient mineral water percolating thru 75 million year old sandstone, leaving brown iron bands behind.  It is all natural.


RHYOLITE EGGS

This rhyolite is quarried in Utah.  It is a volcanic rock with the same chemical composition as granite, but without the large crystals of feldspar and quartz.  It is a welded tuff, formed by grains of volcanic ash that were hot enough to weld themselves together as they accumulated and flowed.

MARBLE EGG

 MFME1 is made in Pakistan from Fossiliferous Marble.  In it you can see Cretaceous age gastropods and bi-valves.

SATIN SPAR GYPSUM EGGS

Satin Spar is a fibrous variety of gypsum that has a satiny luster when viewed from the side, and light transmissibility when viewed from the top or bottom.  It is sometimes sold as TV Rock.  The Satin Spar for these eggs were mined and carved in Morocco.

FLUORITE SPHERE

 This 2.1" diameter sphere was carved from green fluorite from China.  It displays the "watery looking" interior, characteristic of fluorite.

Calcite, calcium carbonate CaCO3, is the building block for limestone and marble.  It can be clear to opaque and colorless to golden, yellow, red, green, white or blue.  These calcite spheres from China were photographed on a wooden light box with a 7 watt bulb and in sunlight.  The sphere MCSPH01 is colorless to slightly yellow and has good clarity and visible insipient cleavage planes within.  It is 2" in diameter.  MCSPH02 is golden and translucent with visible cleavage planes within. It is 3" diameter.  MCSPH03 is golden and translucent to slightly transparent with visible cleavage planes within.  It is 2.4" diameter.

QUARTZ SPHERE

Quartz, silicon dioxide SiO2, is one of the most common, and complex, minerals in the world.  From the   sand grain on the beach to complex twinned crystals, it is one of the most studied and pondered minerals.  MQSPH01 is from Madagascar, is 4.1" in diameter and is very clear and colorless.  It exhibits several stress planes and some nice rainbows.  It is photographed on a wooden light base and in sunlight..

SATIN SPAR SPHERE

Satin spar is a fibrous form of gypsum.  It gives a soft, satiny glow on the light box and silky luster in sunlight.  The fibrous crystal transmits the light similar to ulexite, aka television rock.  This sphere, from Morocco, is 3.3" diameter and is slightly clear to translucent.
