OREODONT
FORNT02 (front, back)
This is a fine example of skull and leg bones of the extinct
sheep-like browsing ruminant Merycoidodon culbertsoni, an early mammal
whose herds roamed the plains of Nebraska and South Dakota. It is still in
matrix that makes an aesthetic presentation. The skull measures 10"
long. It lived 30 million years ago during the Oligocene Epoch
of the Cenozoic Period. It is from the Brule Formation
in the White River Badlands of South Dakota.

FOSSIL SHARK TEETH- OTODUS OBLICUA
FMST13
FNST14
FNST15
FNST16
These fossil shark teeth, while not as large as the megalodon, are of
substantial size and a bit older. They are from 50 million year old
Eocene aged deposits of Khouribga, Morocco. When I get these from my
Moroccan contact, they are only marginally prepared. I then remove more of
the coquina matrix to better expose the tooth. I then cut a flat base so
they stand nicely. Value and price are based on completeness, which
includes the two small cusps on the sides of the tooth; on size; and on the
condition of the tip of the tooth (sharpness). The traditional genus name
for this shark has been Lamna, but recently some paleontologists have
changed this to Otodus. It is an ancestor of the Mackerel shark.

FOSSIL INSECTS- GREEN RIVER FORMATION
FGRIN1
FGRIN2
FGRIN1 is a Crane fly (family Tipulidae) Pronophlebia rediviva
collected from the Green River Formation of western Colorado. It is about
the same age, 50 million years ago, as the Green River fossil fish you can find
on the Fossil Fish Page I collected this
insect at Douglas Pass, Colorado near the famous Microwave Tower. FGRIN2
displays March Fly (family Bibionidae) Plecia paelei specimens from the 18"
layer of the Green River Formation of southwestern Wyoming.

FOSSIL LEAVES- GREEN RIVER FORMATION
FGRL1 is a leaf from the keaki tree, Zelcova nervosa, from the Green River
Formation. It was collected at the Bonanza Ridge location in northeastern
Utah.. It is from the Eocene Epoch, 50 million years ago. FGRL2 is a
Balloon Vine leaf, Cardiospermum coloradensis, also from the Bonanza Ridge
location. FGRL3 is a Sycamore leaf from the same location. This type
of leaf is the favorite of this formation. Although this specimen is not
quite complete, it is easily recognizable. It also has been eaten in part
by an insect. These specimens, along with the fossil
fish and insects, help to provide insight to the ecosystem during the time
of the Green River Formation.
