AGATE BOWLS

 Agate bowl 1.jpg (726330 bytes) MAGBL1    Agate bowl 2.jpg (782804 bytes) MAGBL2    Agate depression1.jpg (770747 bytes) MAGBL3    Agate depression2.jpg (792944 bytes) MAGBL4

Most agates occur as nodules in volcanic rocks in which cavities were filled, wholly or partially, by siliceous matter deposited in regular layers upon

the walls. Such agates, when cut transversely, exhibit a succession of parallel lines, giving a banded appearance to the section. Such stones are known as banded agate, riband agate and striped agate.

In the formation of an ordinary agate, it is probable that Agate is probably formed by waters containing silica in solution (derived perhaps, from the decomposition of some of the silicates

in the lava itself) percolated through the rock and deposited a siliceous coating on the interior of the cavities.

CARVED ONYX

Onyx gobletsMOGPR-Goblets

These water goblets were carved in Pakistan from locally quarried "Cave" Onyx.  They were turned on a special lathe that cuts stone and stand almost 5" tall.

The material is similar to the calcium carbonate flowstone one sees in cave deposits.  It has a lovely translucency you can see as you raise the goblet in the perfect toast.  Cheers!

GOLDENSTONE COASTERS

Kanab Goldenstone Coasters

These 3 3/4" coasters are cut from a scenic sandstone nicknamed "Kanab Goldenstone", as it is quarried near Kanab, Utah.  It is part of the Cretaceous aged Shinarump formation.

The scenic patterns you see here are completely natural.  They are iron rich bands deposited in the sand by mineral rich ground water over the eons of time underground.

Not only are they fascinating to look at, the are absorbent as well so condensation from the glass does not accumulate on the surface.  They are sold in sets of 4.

ARIZONA SIERRA BOOKENDS

Arizona Sierra bkndsfr.jpg (797887 bytes) MASBK3 (front)        Arizona Sierra bkndsback.jpg (767537 bytes) MASBK3 (back)

These bookends are cut from the same formation as the "Kanab Goldenstone" described above, but from a location just across the border in Arizona.

The natural picturesque brown iron banding takes on a reddish color by heating the stone to an undisclosed temperature, causing it to oxidize.

SEPTARIAN BOOKENDS

  Septarian Bknds1.jpg (728930 bytes) MSEPBK1

These Septarian Nodules were formed about 100 million years ago when the Gulf of Mexico reached what is now Southern Utah. Sea (shell) life, killed by volcanic eruptions settled to the sea bottom.

Tide and wave action rolled these shells in the sticky volcanic mud where the acquired a thick coating of gray mud.  As the oceans receded, these nodules were exposed to the atmosphere where they

dried, cracked and shrank.  Later, sea level rose, depositing more sediment on these now rock-hard, cracked, hollow mud bolls or nodules.  Calcite minerals were deposited in the cracks and hollows

by sea water slowly percolating into the nodules.  A thin wall of the yellow calcite was altered into brown aragonite, dividing the gray bentonite clay exterior from the yellow calcite center.  From the Latin

word for this dividing wall, Septum, the nodules are called "Septarians".
