NATURAL TREASURESFETISHES(Click on Image for Enlargement)Fetishes are objects believed, among some peoples, to have magical powers to protect or aid its owner. The Spirit Bear and the Bison, pictured below, are two examples of fetishes that are a part of the culture of the Zuni Native American tribe of southwestern United States. While these stone fetishes were not carved by Zuni Indians, they are a tribute to the importance they play in the Zuni heritage. SEPTARIAN NODULE CARVINGS

MPICBR2(frnt,
bck) These fetishes were carved and polished out of Picasso Marble, from Utah. The stone gets its name from the abstract design it exhibits.
The patterns in the stone are a result of very hot magma (subsurface molten rock) contacting limestone sediment. The high temperature
and pressure altered the limestone to a dense marble. Minerals from the magma infiltrated fractures in the limestone/marble,
creating the feathery lines and scenic designs.
